Happy birthday to me! This year I decided to take matters into my own hands and unapologetically make a big deal of my birthday. After all, I spend more time around myself than anyone else. I bought myself presents, told absolutely everybody it was my birthday, went away for a rock climbing trip with friends. I got my sister to go out for breakfast with me at one of our favourite spots. I took heaps of photos of heaps of things.
Two of my self-birthday presents arrived. The first was a backpack I bought to use on all my upcoming climbing trips. Unfortunately, the backpack wasn’t the right one I ordered. The model they sent me wasn’t suitable for a climbing trip so I messaged them to ask what they would do to resolve the dilemma. They replied that I could post it back for a refund or keep the back which was ‘of superior value anyway’. I had to laugh at that. The bag may be of more value to them, but it doesn’t serve the purpose I bought it for so it is worth absolutely nothing to me. In fact, now I have this useless bag that I don’t know what to do with. I asked if they would pay for the return postage (it would be over $100) and they’ve not responded since. It’s been a wild story so far with twists and turns. Will our hero have a happy ending? Who knows what will happen next?
Then the shoes I bought for myself arrived. Even though I own a pair already and tried on several pairs in-store the ones I bought online are a very different, uncomfortable size. They are shorter AND narrower. The difference is wild. So now I have a pair of very cool shoes that don’t fit me. So I’ll probably sell them on eBay or whatever. Because this mistake is simply mine for assuming that a brand might have consistent sizing (what a fool I am), I have to post them back at my own expense if I want to return them. Annoying that I’ll lose money on them either way, but online shopping is a wild adventure.
So while my two main birthday presents to myself totally didn’t work out, it was hilarious seeing what unfolded with them and no real harm has been done. They turned out to be less of birthday presents and more of online shopping adventures. Perhaps I should just stick to rock climbing gear and photography equipment?
Anyhoo, after taking some leftover cake from the family dinner into work today my birthday festivities have finally ended five days after they started and let me tell you, that is not enough days for me to milk the whole birthday thing. I think next year I will start earlier so that I can get in at least seven.

A belated happy birthday to you Liane! I think self-indulgence for birthdays is a necessity. I have a big birthday approaching next month, so have booked two luxury hotels, an afternoon tea, and a zip wire adventure! That probably won't be the end of it.. You look gorgeous, the colours and textures in your outfit are dreamy. Xx
Happy birthday to you! What a fun idea – you have me pondering what I could do for my own birthday in a couple of months. I'll heed your warnings on the online shopping front, though. And yes: definitely go for the full week next year.
