A few weeks ago got dressed with my friend Melissa, ordered an Uber and wandered down a lampshade lit alleyway on Camp St to The Lost Ones Basement Bar. The Lost Ones in an Art Gallery, no imagine an Art Gallery deciding to run a cocktail bar in their basement. That is exactly what this bar is. Now you have the vibe of the venue, imagine that my favourite niche perfumery teamed up with this bar to launch their new cocktail menu. Because that is the event I was attending.
Off the top of my head I can think of two fragrances that are named after cocktails: Gin Fizz by Lubin and Moscow Mule by Juliette Has A Gun. So knowing that perfumers already have a fascination with cocktails, it was a delicious delight to be put into the hands of a mixologist that had spent hours in the Sweet Fern store finding the right perfumes to pair with their latest cocktail menu.

Our first drink was made from white rum, cucumber, sugar and mint and it was paired with the Moscow Mule. We sipped and sniffed and tried to get the attention of the resident gallery cat.
Next, they brought out a Negroni and we compared it with several fragrances while hearing stories of perfumes. One was a high court judge who wore a special fragrance at work. When people stepped close enough to smell it, it worked as an unconscious indicator of personal space and meant the people interacting with her in the courtroom wouldn’t overstep their boundaries because the fragrance indicated the space around her was hers. It made her feel more confident and kept hold of the power she needed in the room. I liked this story the most.
The final cocktail was visually gorgeous as well as tasty. I have not helped myself with my hastily scribbled notes which swooned over how the cocktail made the caramels and oranges of all the following scents pop. This was my favourite cocktail and as a result, I purchased a perfume that was matched with it, Noir Exquis. As the smell settles onto my skin it turns into caramel and makes me feel like I’m in love with my own body. Scroll down to see a photo of the final cocktail, a few sips in.
After a brilliant evening, we ordered plates of potato gems, laughed together and smelled all the fragrances on each other’s arms.
