If you’ve been reading my blog for a few months you would have seen my post about the beautiful handmade skirts from Mokkafiveoclock on Etsy. After I shared the post Monica, who runs the Etsy store, made contact with me about the wish I had expressed that she made both midi and maxi skirts. Full circle maxi skirts had been something I dreamed about, but not seen much of. Monica offered me the opportunity to work with her to collaborate on designing the pieces I would love to wear.
I was, of course, over the moon with this idea. To work with another creative mind is always a fulfilling process. We discussed lengths and materials, and after a little time, she sent me through two skirts to try out. The results are absolute perfection. Monica’s choice of fabric for this skirt takes it to a new level of elegance.
From the moment I put it on I felt so much joy. When I was a child I really enjoyed dressing up. The pleasure of wearing clothes, of styling an identity, of revelling in the beauty of a carefully created garment, is still with me now. When I put this skirt on I immediately felt that nostalgic pleasure of pure, blissful enjoyment of clothes.
There are not enough maxi skirts in the world. The sensation of a skirt is so much different to trousers. Feeling this skirt and the heavy fabric move fluidly around my legs as I walk invokes elegance akin to the movement of a dancer. It doesn’t matter how clumsily I walk, the skirt is like autocorrect for my movement. It takes whatever I do and turns it, rather dramatically, into elegance.
One does not wear this skirt subtly. I feel like it boldly says something about my soul to the world around me. It’s a feeling of being present and strong, without demanding attention. It’s an awareness of the boldness and beauty of the world around me. It’s a uniqueness that shrugs off the boundaries of the beige-eoise. It is timeless. It’s very me.
Now I know in writing this, someone somewhere is reading it thinking ‘I love that skirt. I wish I had her confidence so I could wear it.’ If this is you, then I say to you: confidence takes daily practice. It comes from within. It begins with a choice. That choice is small, and frail, and at first you will feel like it will blow over in the next strong wind. But, that choice is yours. It is small. It may be frail. But it is something that nothing can take away from you. Understanding that tiny piece of ownership, knowing that choice is yours is all it takes. This choice to have courage, this choice to belong only to me, it is small, but it is mine and I refuse to give it away. If you feel like you’re invisible, if you feel like you’re too small to be the grand soul within you, let me invite you to make that choice.
Have courage. Wear red.
