Continuing on from yesterday’s introduction of boohoo.com’s unique style campaign #WeAreUs, here’s another look at the preppy influence on my individual fashion style from my hometown of Ballarat. This time I’m capturing something more casual, whilst still pulling from the preppy theme I love so much.
When I was in high school, the best jumpers with v-necks were reserved for boys only. I hated that because nothing made me look dumpy and hate myself like a round necked girls jumper. I ended up campaigning for my own sanity by wearing a guy’s jumper anyway. I got many detentions for wearing the jumper not assigned to my gender, but authority can eat my elegant dignity. Not only was I much happier in a piece of clothing that gave me dignity, gender is a construct and I refused to be boxed up into what I was allowed to wear because of it.
So if there’s one thing I want to show you with this v-neck sweater as part of the #WeAreUs campaign, it’s to be yourself. You don’t have to follow rules or bow to authority to be a good person. You don’t have to compromise your sanity or your identity to get through life without conflict. Don’t compromise who you are. You are all you have got.
I guess this is the catch-22 of uniforms. The name uniform means to make something all the same. Uniformity and conformity don’t have to be the same thing. Find yourself in the uniform, and be unique.
