Houndstooth Super Hero

I have been waiting to show you this cape since I began my exploration into fashion blogging in 2014. I’ve worked on a couple of designs for things with Claire Schreenan. Imagine a world where you could bring to mind any amazing design you would kill to wear, and someone incredible could make it for you. That’s pretty much how things went me, Claire and this cape. I love capes and I have a growing collection. I pin them regularly on this Pinterest board. In my capely imagining I found myself swooning for the idea of a houndstooth cape. I used a trip to New York as an excuse to have one made.

Getting my hands on the fabric was quite serendipitous. Clare and I were chatting in her workshop and she pulled out a skirt she had made and I declared that it was exactly what I had imagined for a houndstooth cape. She called the stockist straight away and they had 3 meters left which was the exact amount we needed. The houndstooth pattern is formed by interwoven silk threads. It feel spectacular to touch. The neck on the cape is extra high and wide to allow for wearing a scarf under it in winter. The back of the cape is a semi circle shape to make it hang loose. I prefer to wear it with a belt at the front, which you can’t see because I have this amazingly warm hand muff in the way. This is a modified version of what I wore to afternoon tea at The Plaza in New York.

Now. Look how beautifully this cape hangs at the back.

This is Wendouree Lake. It’s 6km around and is a big part of life in my home town. The changing of the seasons is always the most visible here. When we took these photos the wind was bitterly cold, and the grey skies matched the grey water. The trees have lost almost all of their leaves and their branches are always black with damp, forming a tangled and tortured silhouette against the sky. There had been sailboats out taking advantage of the wind earlier that day, and I snapped the below picture on my phone.

One of the last days of autumn and all the sailing boats were out on the lake in the misty rain. #Ballarat is too pretty. #loveballaratinautumn

It was because of this photo that I decided to go back later and take these photos on the same spot. Sadly, there were no sailboats when we came back.
