Last year I fell in love with the incredible experience of a Perfume Masterclass at Sweet Fern in Ballarat. At the end of my first masterclass, I walked away with a bottle of Juliette Has a Gun’s black bottled fragrance ‘Lady Vengeance’. It was my first proper perfume purchase and one that began a love affair. You may recall me talking about it in this blog post shoot I did which featured the bottle.
Well, the fragrance house has recently released a new scent that I was keen to try out. It’s hard to describe fragrances to people, but to me, the smell is warm. It smells like all-encompassing summer heat. It’s bold, loud and fun. I got an idea for shooting it and, after many attempts, we finally got it done.
It wasn’t easy though. Once I knew what I wanted to shoot as far as the outfit went, I then needed to find a shoot location. During the summer family trip we drove through Geelong and I remember this bright and happy location on the waterfront. Great, location and outfit sorted, next we would need to take the pictures.
To do this shoot I wanted morning light so the sun would be behind me during the pictures. This would mean a ridiculously early morning for some unlucky photographer. So to coordinate someone that is willing and available to get up at 5.20am that will work on a day that I can do the same, which is also a day when the weather is right, that was hard. And at first, I only looked at the temperature when checking the weather. Our first chance to do it came ay Australia day. This was a mistake for many reasons. At sunrise, the Geelong waterfront was swarming with people wanting to save their spot to view the fireworks for that evening. Also, while the weather was sunny, it wasn’t clear. So with a misty white sky, our light would have been terrible. Then, we attempted to shoot a different outfit only to discover that I had no battery in the camera. (If you follow me on Instagram and tune in on Fridays for my regular daily diary then you will have lived all this with me).
I then had to return the perfume bottle to Sweet Fern for them to use in a Masterclass. I finally borrowed it again and when weather, photographer and I aligned we managed to get down to Geelong again to shoot! Sure, we missed the best light by about 20 minutes, but from previous experience, there is SO MUCH WORSE THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. Anyway, here’s my final offering of fun for Juliette Has a Gun and their delicious new fragrance: Sunny Side Up.
