The Provincial Hotel and their attached restaurant – Lola – have sneakily become one of my favourite places in Ballarat. No surprises there. When someone is passionate about something, really loves it, right down to the smallest details, it is infectious and endlessly inspiring.
I bought myself a ticket to the launch of their Lola gin. Lola Montez, the Countess of Landfeld, was a woman infamous for her feminism. She was quick-witted, a magnificent liar, unapologetic, charismatic, notoriously fearless and the brief period she stopped by Ballarat in the 1850s she became a local legend. The restaurant is named after her and the gin flavour was inspired by her.
The day was a three-course meal with matched gins. The makers of the gin (Kilderkin Distillery) talked about each gin and the process behind getting from idea to the glass on our table. The food was good but the standout for me was the dessert which I’ve thought about every day since. I didn’t get a bottle of the gin on the day but will be going back to get one.
I’m wearing: Zara London and Two Sisters the label.
Here are some photos from the adventure.
