Perth may be the most isolated capital city on the planet, but they have it easy in other areas. Mainly in weather. After spending a week in Perth and enjoying balmy Autumn temperatures I felt bad for all my Victorian friends that were adjusting to the first chilly temperatures of the season. ANZAC day dawn ceremonies in Ballarat were enjoyed with a temp of 2 degrees (Celsius. That’s 35.4F). Meanwhile in Perth, I enjoyed the chance to keep strutting about in summer dresses like this sleeveless number.
I was out an about to have a look at Public, an art event presented by Form in WA. 45 artists take part in the event over 9 days in Perth, reclaiming public space with art on a massive scale. Multistory buildings, public car parks, skinny lane ways and alleys were transformed and we wandered the streets to check it out.
I don’t think Straker’s piece was part of the event, but I’m a die hard Mr. Squiggle fan. My favourite character is absent. For lots of my childhood, my mother called me Gus. Gus is the snail with a flowerpot on its back in Mr. Squiggle, not included in the above neon work. That coughing, cancerous tractor is missing too.
