Daisies and Frocktober

This week has been all about daisies for me! Not only has the sunny spring weather seen the daisies around the lake bloom into a pretty white and pink carpet, I’ve been in a show called Daisy Pulls It Off. The play is a send-up of the old British boarding school adventure stories, but with every possible plot crammed into one show. It’s a self-aware, tongue-in-cheek story which is full of laughs and good times. It’s a show that has been a blast to both rehearse and perform. Normally, there’s a point where I’ve found a show gets boring and you get right down to doing the work to make it happen. Not with this show! There were laughs at every rehearsal. Every part of the show is a joy. In the few points that I’m not on stage, I will sneak side stage to watch the funny scenes unfold. Find out about the show here.

So it was a lovely opportunity to wear a favourite vintage white dress of mine down to the daisy patches around the lake, partly because of the link with the title of the play I’m in and partly because this month I’ve been asked to help share the love for a month-long event that is very close to my heart: Frocktober.

Frocktober is an annual event for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). There are 1500 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year in Australia. Not many of them survive past the next 5 years. It is the most deadly gynecological cancer, killing one woman in Australia every 10 hours. Unlike other cancers, there is no early detection test. OCRF has been around since 2000. They work with hospitals, universities and research institutes across Australia and New Zealand. OCRF assist to fund and guide research that will help develop and early detection test. That early detection could help save so many lives. Currently, the only test available is by taking a tissue sample during surgery. Raising awareness around ovarian cancer and its symptoms won’t save lives. Early detection will. Viable research is the answer and early detection is the key.
